Top Reasons To Start Homeschooling

Have you ever thought about the school system and where it’s headed? What about if you should homeschool your child? Then you are in the perfect place. I am going to discuss what homeschool is, the benefits of homeschooling, why it’s not for everyone, and my top reasons why I homeschool. Let’s dive in.

What is homeschooling?

Homeschooling is when you decide to teach your children at home instead of sending them to a school building. It’s when you take your child’s education into your own hands.

It may seem out of reach at first, and maybe a little nerve wrecking but it really is much simpler than it seems. There’s also so many organizations that are out there now and they are helping homeschoolers across the nation. Homeschooling can also be completed through an accredited online school.

Why do parents choose to home school? What are the benefits?

There are many reasons why parents would choose to home school. Each reason will be different for each family. It’s very important to know your reasons why you want to homeschool. Your reason why can be turned into a mission statement that you post somewhere in your home. This reminds everyone why you’re choosing that route. It will also help encourage you to keep going when times get a little tough.

Here’s a simple list of reasons why parents choose to homeschool.

  1. Lessons can be infused with family values and beliefs .
  2. Limit of negative influences.
  3. Children can learn at their own pace.
  4. Work is done for mastery.
  5. They become independent thinkers.
  6. More time with family.
    • That’s not even half the reasons why parents choose to homeschool. There are almost too many to list in one article. The benefits of homeschooling are endless. You get to have more of an influence on your children than the outside world because they are spending more time with you than random people who may or may not have different beliefs than you do.

Homeschool is not for everyone

On top of that, with the way America is going it seems safer to keep your children at home. Now this may not be the case for everyone though. Some children live in an environment where school may be safer for them. It really depends on your individual situation and again what is best for your family.

Homeschooling is definitely not for the weak. You have to have some sort of discipline to get up everyday and understand that your children’s education is now in your hands. You have to make sure you have the materials you need and the support when needed. Now everyday is not going to be perfect and some days you won’t feel like doing it, but the reward for staying consistent and toughing it out will be worth it.

Public schools also provide meals for children who may not be getting as much food at home. So there are many reasons to consider, before jumping straight in. I do understand that not everyone is in a situation to where they can start homeschooling right away. If you are interested in homeschooling then I suggest praying about it and doing your research. Talk to other homeschooling parents to help get an idea of what it may look like for you.

You are the example for your children. Showing them how to be there and show up for themselves even on days it feels hard teaches them so much within itself. It shows them how to be determined, how to fight through tough feelings, and how to keep going even when times get hard. Although it may seem hard, it is definitely worth every second.

Why I chose to homeschool?

The benefits when you begin to homeschool are endless. There were so many reasons why I wanted to homeschool, but the main reason was because I knew the school system has its flaws and I didn’t want my kids to be subjected to what it was offering.

The school system is a set up to get us ready to enter into the workforce. There is a ton of knowledge that I feel is overlooked in the school. I decided that I would take on the responsibility of teaching them myself. But I’m not alone. There are other parents that are making this exact same change.

The Benefits and My Why

  1. Children can learn at their own pace. If they need help with a certain topic or aren’t understanding something, we can spend more time to learn it.
  2. I want them to be independent thinkers. So that they won’t just follow rules or listen to others but question things when they don’t seem right.
  3. You can find your children’s strengths and their weaknesses. This is good for everyone to know. Being able to understand this at early age is even better. You can work on your weaknesses and enrich your strengths.
  4. It’s flexible. You can do the teaching when you feel it’s best. There’s no set time that you have to be there. You can take breaks when needed. You make the schedule.
  5. You have time to do things you love. Work on talents, spend time learning about your interests, and even perfect a craft.
  6. They can discus and explore thoughts and ideas without fear of ridicule. Let’s be honest, some children as well as adults, can be plain rude and not have a filter. I want them to learn how to speak their mind with confidence and not feel bad when they ask questions.
  7. Limit of negative influences and false teachings. You never know what other people are teaching their children, or what the beliefs of their teacher are. The influence of other people is huge on children. I want to be sure they have a solid foundation of what is truth before others try to get a hold on them.

Now these are only a few reasons why I wanted to homeschool. I felt led by God to teach my children at home and so I took a leap of faith and started homeschooling four years ago. Now I have a 3rd grader, a 1st grader, and 2 preschoolers. That’s definitely a lot of heads to teach but it will be an exciting school year.

In conclusion

With all of that being said if you are still interested in homeschooling I would definitely do it. At least consider it and weigh your options. Think about the season of life you are in and what’s best for your family at the time. Homeschooling is very possible. Especially with more parents choosing to homeschool, there are more and more resources becoming available daily.
