Crafting Colors in the Breeze: How to Create a Rainbow Windsock from a Toilet Paper Roll

Arts and crafts are one of my favorite hobbies to do. It gets even more fun when I get to do it with the kids. In order to have fun you have to have a lot of patience and understand that everything will not come out perfect.

Today’s review will be over the creation of a rainbow windsock. For those that may not know what a windsock is, because I sure didn’t until this craft, it’s a flexible cylinder or cone that is mounted on a mast to show the direction of the wind. These are used at airports or chemical fields.

Now of course today’s craft is not going to be something that goes in an airfield, but you can certainly put it outside. We kept ours in doors because we like to look at our artwork. Also, because we don’t have a mast to hang it on.

What you’ll need

The items you will need to create the windsock are:

  1. Paper towel or toilet paper roll
  2. Paint or markers.
  3. Tissue paper
  4. Blank paper to make clouds.
  5. Yarn
  6. Single hole punch
  7. Glue
  8. Scissors

When we created our windsock, we used a glue gun. I think it keeps paper on better than regular glue, and we besides the hot glue we had glue sticks, which I’m not sure would have worked as well.

You can use blue paint to coat the toilet paper roll to make it look like the sky. Or you can use markers. Keep in mind when using paint, you’ll have to wait for it to dry in order to continue. Since my kid’s attention span keeps them from having patience, we used markers. It still turned out great.

Steps to create.

The first thing you are going to do is draw clouds on a blank piece of paper and cut them out. We put smiley faces on ours to make it more fun. After that you’ll paint or color your toilet paper roll. If you wanted, you could paint first and while it dries cut out the clouds.

After that you are going to glue the clouds to the toilet paper roll. Next, glue the tissue paper to the roll at the bottom. For this we used multiple colors. I cut the tissue paper the night before we created the windsock.

The last step is to poke holes on the sides of the top of the toilet paper role to put the yarn through. We didn’t have a single hand hole puncher at the time, so we just poked holes in the top. Pulled the yarn through, tied it to where it would hang up, and boom! You have a rainbow windsock.

This is the windsock I created. The boys’ windsocks came out pretty great too! Next time I’ll have to get a picture of their artwork without them in it.

Overall rating

Overall, the arts and craft were pretty easy and fun. They were all involved and very hands on. They love being able to choose what colors to use and I even let them draw on their clouds. Everyone wasn’t able to get a smiley face on their cloud, but they got something on there. 🙂

If you use a hot glue gun you will most likely have to do it for them, and this will create patience in everyone has to wait their turn. Not pricey to create if you have majority of the items.

You can find a lot of these items at your local dollar tree or hobby lobby if you have one. The rating for this project is a 10 out of 10. I originally got the idea from here: https://www.easypeasyandfun.com/rainbow-windsock-toilet-paper-roll-craft/ .

Let me know in the comments if you tried this with your kiddos, if it was any fun, or if you even changed some of the supplies that were used. Have fun crafting!
